How old is your wiring?
Faulty and aging wiring is one of the major causes of electrical fires in the home. You can avoid these by having regular checks carried out on the condition of your cables, switches, sockets and other accessories. There are clear signs that can help you tell the age of electrical installations in your home. These are:
- Cables coated in black rubber (phased out in the 1960s);
- Cables coated in lead or fabric (before the 1960s);
- A fusebox with a wooden back, cast iron switches, or a haphazard mixture of fuse boxes (before the 1960s);
- Older round pin sockets and round light switches, braided flex hanging from ceiling roses, brown and black switches and sockets mounted in skirting boards (before the 1960s); and
- Wall-mounted light switches in bathrooms (before the 1960s).
What Rewiring Do You Require?
A full rewire may be required, however in some cases a partial rewire is all that is needed to ensure safety. A full assessment will be carried out and the work required will depend on the condition and age of your existing installation. Sockets and fuse boards may also need to be replaced as part of the rewiring process.
What does the work involve?
A full rewire means the electrical wiring in every room of your home needs replacing. Light fittings, sockets and switches will be removed and replaced with new ones. Cables can be chased into the walls & completely hidden. Alternatively a rewire can involve a surface rewire where the cables are hidden in mini trunking fitted onto the surface of the walls.
Part Rewire
A part rewire may be the replacement of a section of the installation or just updating of the fuse boxes, fittings or cables to upgrade an installation to the current regulations.
